Abstract
Considerable progress has been made in recent years in the recognition and treatment of pancreatic diseases. Despite this progress, however, unsolved problems remain. Though we have seen numerous patients with disorders of the gastrointestinal system, those with pancreatic disorders are not commonly encountered. Unfortunately, reports of clinical studies of pancreatic disorders in this country are lacking.
At this time, the clinical records of 64 cases with pancreatic disorders who were admitted to Severance Hospital during the past 5 years were reviewed, and_the following results were obtained.
There were thirty-one cases acute pancreatitis, four cases of chronic pancreatitis, and twenty-nine cases of carcinoma of the pancreas. Clinical observations included age and sex distribution symptomatology laboratory and X-ray findings, and their courses.
All cases with acute pancreatitis treated by medical management and two patients treated by surgical operation healed without any particular complications, whereas one patient with chronic pancreatitis died under medical treatment.
None with pancreatic carcinoma received radical surgery, because most of them entered the hospital during the late phase of their disease. Finally, the current literature of pancreatic disorders is reviewed.
